Huawei will soon release its latest laptop in the Philippines, powered by the new Intel Core Ultra processor. It offers several improvements in terms of performance, power efficiency, and AI acceleration thanks to its dedicated NPU. But that’s not the only thing the new MateBook 14 2024 has to offer. Learn more about it below.
Let’s start with the design. The new MateBook 14 is a premium laptop with a cold metal body that weighs 1.31 kg, a wedge-shaped design, and smooth chamfers on the sides. It has vibes similar to Apple’s MacBooks – industrial yet stylish. It comes in two colors: Space Grey and Green. What we have is the latter and I must say, green is a refreshing look for a laptop.
Despite the thin 14.5mm body, Huawei managed to fit essential ports like the USB-C for charging and DisplayPort (would be better if it had two), 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI, and a 3.5mm headphone and mic combo jack.
Under the laptop, we have dot patterns for the vent and speakers. The audio quality is good for a set of laptop speakers. It can get loud, which is great if you’re watching movies or series but don’t expect a lot of bass. Internally, the MateBook 14 is equipped with the HUAWEI Metaline Antenna for better WiFi reception.
Open the laptop and you’ll be greeted by the 14.2-inch HUAWEI FullView Display with 2.8K (2880 x 1920) resolution, a variable refresh rate of 48Hz to 120Hz, hardware-level low blue light, and 1920Hz PWM dimming. The OLED panel with a P3 color gamut ensures punchy and accurate colors with deep blacks. Altogether, it delivers a viewing experience that is comfortable to the eyes, sharp, immersive, and fluid.
And that’s not all. It’s a touchscreen and is covered in glass allowing your fingers to glide smoothly. So not only do you have a generous screen real estate, but it also gives the users more options to navigate the interface. It even supports the HUAWEI M-Pencil (3rd-gen) which is great for taking notes and quick artwork.
Typing on the MateBook 14 is great. It uses a frameless backlit keyboard with two levels of brightness. It has good travel and doesn’t feel flimsy. The trackpad is also smooth and spacious and can provide solid left and right clicks without flexing. Found above it on the right is the power button that also doubles as a fingerprint scanner. It’s quick and responsive.
Powering the new MateBook 14 is the Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor with a max clock speed of 3.8GHz, 16GB of RAM, and 1TB SSD. There’s also an Ultra 5 version with a lower price (more on that later). The new processor offers better CPU performance compared to its predecessor and better GPU performance with its Intel Arc Graphics. You can also increase the performance using Super Turbo 2.0, which optimizes the system and makes apps open and respond faster.
Furthermore, it has a dedicated NPU for AI features such as the AI camera that works in tandem with the 1080p webcam for sharper images when you’re in a video call, AI Sound and Personal Voice Enhancement for better-sounding audio when you’re in a call, and AI Search to easily locate files on the laptop. Keeping everything cool are the dual shark fin fans that blow warm air out of the vents at the back.
And since this is a HUAWEI device, you can take advantage of features like HUAWEI Share, and HUAWEI Super Device to collaborate with other Huawei devices like a smartphone, tablet, Smart TV, or another laptop. If you already own another Huawei device, this feature significantly increases productivity and convenience.
As for the battery, the new MateBook 14 is equipped with a 7-Wh battery that Huawei claims to last for 19 hours. During our time with it, we were able to get almost 18 hours, which is still good. Huawei includes a 65W charging brick which you can also use for your Huawei smartphones or tablets.
The HUAWEI MateBook 14 with Intel Core Ultra processor is a joy to use. It’s stylish, premium, and youthful but packed with serious productivity features. Since it’s slim and light we are regularly tempted to pick it up, place it on the sofa, and watch a movie. The large screen makes it an enjoyable experience. Then when it’s time to work, we don’t have to leave the sofa, we can just work right away from there. The large screen, great performance, HUAWEI Super Device features, and long battery life just make everything easy. It just seamlessly blends portability, entertainment, and productivity into one powerful and versatile device.
